TRADE ROUNDUP: Teams Active Before Deadline

by Owen Munro

The BCJALL has settled into what can be considered two distinct tiers. The top five teams - Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, New Westminster, Victoria and Langley - have all distanced themselves from the rest of the pack. It's not a surprise that those teams are looking to make some moves before the June 30 deadline. Delta, Burnaby and Nanaimo have already been looking towards the future, dealing some veterans in exchange for players that will contribute in the long run.

Here are a few moves that have been in the last few days.

Ryan Jones

Mason Morais

2019 2nd Round Pick

Future Considerations

Ryan Jones, the younger brother of standout Mitch Jones, has been lighting the lamp again for the Islanders this season with 21 goals and 38 assists in 18 games, with a 17.4% shooting percentage. That builds on the 78 points in 18 games he had last year as he had more help on the offensive end to shoulder the load. He also had 14 assists in 4 games with Ontario's Six Nations.

This year Ryan is staying at home, being dealt to the Salmonbellies in order to help bring a Minto back to BC. In return, Delta gets a promising player in Mason Morais, who has been dependable for the Maple Ridge Burrards Junior B Tier 1 club as a transition force. A second-round pick will be helpful for Delta's rebuild, possibly even finding a player who can contribute for the full five years.

Adam Fulton

Future Considerations

Trevor Funk

2019 3rd, 4th, 5th Round Picks

Coquitlam and Nanaimo have linked up for deadline deals in the past as they make good trading partners, and this one is no exception. The Adanacs are one of the few Junior A clubs that can afford to consistently give away solid draft picks and not have it haunt them. They have arguably the best minor to junior pipeline in Western Canada and replenish from their strong feeder system in Midget A and Junior B.

That essentially makes the deal Adam Fulton for Trevor Funk. Funk was a high draft pick for Coquitlam, the latter of Coquitlam's two first-round picks going at No. 8 overall in the 2018 Draft. Funk is another Maple Ridge product and is having a breakout season with the Burrards. He has 28 goals and 52 points in just 12 games with Maple Ridge and has made a few Jr. A cameos this season.

Fulton adds another ready-now depth player to Coquitlam and has the ability to chip in on both ends of the floor.

Kyle Durec heads to Saskatchewan

The SWAT has added Burnaby's Kyle Durec as they gear up to make their first Minto Cup in the team's history. It would also be the first time a Saskatchewan lacrosse club has made the National Championship tournament. Durec adds an experienced body who can fit in with the gritty style that people would come to expect of the club as they try to find the way into the Cup.

Durec is a two-way player who had 10 goals in 11 games for the Lakers, while shooting 35.7% on 28 shots.

Okotoks adds trio of BC players

The exodus of Lakers players continues as Burnaby gives a group of hard-working, dedicated kids a shot at a Minto Cup. Burnaby has sent Mason Pomeroy and goaltender Elijah Uema-Martin to the Raiders as they get set to host the big show in August. Okotoks has also added Delta's Riley Phillips, the BCJALL first star of the week and a player who's already added three points for his new club.

Uema-Martin has been unlucky in the win-loss column so far this year with an 1-8-1 record, but he's faced 470 shots and saved 348 of them, good for a .740 save percentage.

Phillips spearheaded the Islanders attack for much of the season and wants one more crack at winning the Minto after coming so close with Delta in 2016.

Pomeroy was third in the Lakers in points, putting up an identical 17 goals and 17 assists in 13 games. Pomeroy, who is shooting at a 21.5% clip, also had 27 goals in 21 games last season as well.
