Future Considerations
Ryan Jones will get one more crack at a Minto Cup. The Delta Islanders are 2-7 as we near the midpoint of the BCJALL regular season, and are now officially looking towards the future by moving the gifted offensive player to the Langley Thunder. It's also a clearcut sign the Langley Thunder expect to be competing in the Junior A national championships in their own backyard in August.
Langley is getting one of the most impactful offensive players in the past few years in Jones. He's scoring at a 3 point per game clip with the Islanders this season, right around where he was during his 59-point season he put up with Delta last season. One thing that we know will likely improve is Jones' shooting percentage. He's shooting at an 8.5 per cent clip so far this season, down from 17.4% and 15.9% the previous two seasons in Delta.
He also brings a lot of experience to the Langley club. Jones has been dealt in both previous seasons, last year to New West and Six Nations the year before. He won a Minto with the Arrows before returning back to BC, but missed out last season. His last season in Junior lacrosse, you can expect a motivated Jones. Put him in the same lineup as studs like Ryan Martel and Nathaniel Kozevnikov, and the Thunder are building something special at the LEC.
Harrison Smith is coming alongside Jones. A solid transition player, Smith only played seven games last season but looked good in a 16-game stretch in 2017. He will add more depth to the Thunder's back-end.
Delta gets some promising young players in return. Aiden Ellis has chipped in offensively for the Thunder this season but is primarily a defenceman. Surrey product Ty Ewen can also play both ways and has six points in three games thus far. Whyte is a former Port Moody minor product who played his Intermediate ball with Maple Ridge, before making the move across the Golden Ears. He has a goal in the one appearance he's made so far.
