THREE STARS: Armstrong, Pomeroy & Claxton win week one honours

by Owen Munro

The BCJALL is jumping into high gear as teams edge closer to getting the first third of the regular season out of the way. The games will only get tighter and we will surely see some outstanding individual performances every night.

We've already been introduced to the next crop of great BCJALL players. Two of the guys on our list this week didn't play a go-to role last year, but are thriving this season when given more on their plate. The other is a rookie who is the next in line of great Nanaimo goaltenders.

1st STAR - DENNON ARMSTRONG, COQUITLAM ADANACS

LAST WEEK - 3 GAMES, 7 GOALS, 6 ASSISTS, 30 SHOTS (23% SHOOTING)

Whether it has been in Intermediate or Junior, Dennon Armstrong has always been a point producer. He put up one of the higher goals and points totals among first-year players last season, and was almost a goal-a-game player into the MInto Cup.

With the turnover that happened on the offensive side of the ball, Armstrong is well on pace to smash the 57 points he put up in 2016. He's still shooting above 20 per cent even though he's seen a huge uptick in shots. Armstrong also isn't relying on the man advantage to find his points; he's a great fit for what Coquitlam likes to do offensively.

2nd STAR - DARIAN CLAXTON, NANAIMO TIMBERMEN

LAST WEEK - 2 GAMES, 94 SHOTS AGAINST, 17 GOALS AGAINST, .819 SAVE %, 118:48 MINUTES

Claxton stepped right into the Nanaimo crease and been a rock for the upstart Timbermen. His numbers are great for a rookie; his .809 overall save percentage puts him fifth in the league, and he's tied for fourth in wins. He's been a big reason why Nanaimo has come up on top in some of these early dog fights.

Even the progress he's made, along with the team, since the start of the season is great to see. They went from losing 16-5 to Coquitlam, to giving them a credible game just a few weeks later, staying competitive in a 10-6 loss.

Claxton is a big reason for that. He's also come up huge already in their overtime victory over the Burnaby Lakers, making 40 saves on 47 shots.

3rd STAR - MASON POMEROY, BURNABY LAKERS

LAST WEEK - 3 GAMES, 1 GOAL, 8 ASSISTS, 12 SHOTS (8.3% SHOOTING)

He may not be the type of players to put up five points consistently, but if you want a gamer night in and night out, look no further than Mason Pomeroy.

Pomeroy has been at his best as a distributor, and was in on three monster goals in Burnaby's big comeback over Delta. He had one of the goals that sparked the three-goal run to tie the game. He dished the game-tying assist to callup Josh Dumont, and then gave Dylan Kaminski the rock for the game-winner as well. With all of the other great offensive talent the Lakers have accumulated, Pomeroy probably feels right at home dishing the ball off all game.

He's also suffering from a bit of bad luck. He's getting four to six good shots a game, he's just not putting the ball in the net right now. As he continues to develop through the season, you can expect that number to go up.
