Six Nations Having Troubles with BC Teams at Minto
In order for Six Nations to be able to contend for top spot in the tournament, a win tonight was a must. Unfortunately the Arrows would face their most familiar Minto opponent from the west- the Lakers.
Both teams came off great wins; Six Nations punishing Edmonton last night, and Burnaby pulling a come from behind win against the host Salmonbellies.
First blood would go to the Arrows with a nice unassisted short handed goal from Tory Gardner halfway through the first; but after that it was all Burnaby.
Two goals from Alex Gajic and a power play marker from Jamie Lincoln with 11 seconds to go would give the Lakers a 3-1 lead to head into the second.
Burnaby would waste no time in adding to their lead. Josh Funk and Pete McFetridge had great goals with impressive set ups, and Stephan Leblanc would get two goals for insurance.
Six Nations would switch goaltenders after the McFetridge goal, with Joe Johnson replacing Ben Van Every. Johnson did a great job subbing in, making great saves when the Arrows needed him.
Going into the third with a seven goal lead, Burnaby played safe- knowing that Six Nations wouldn’t lay down for the rest of the game. Everyone in the building could sense a goal was coming. Sure enough Cody Jamieson scored on a great pass from teammate/partner in points Shawn Evans.
Dane Dobbie would get on the score sheet for the Lakers, and Brock Armour would put in an unassisted open-netter with a couple of minutes to go to end the game 10-4 for the BC champs.
Both team MVP’s went to the goaltenders tonight, most notably to Angus Goodleaf who stood tall and wide for Burnaby shutting down their notable offense, and managing to assist on two of Burnaby’s goals.
Co-Coach Curt Malawsky says learning from last year was the key for tonight’s victory. “We were in the exact same position last year and we lost, we were adamant about not making that mistake twice”
With their win Burnaby advances to the championship game being held this Saturday. Tomorrow's action sees the Salmonbellies (1-1) take on the Edmonton Miners (0-2). As always the game goes down at 7:30PM at Queen's Park in New West.
