LEC to Host 2014 Minto Cup
TOWNSHIP OF LANGLEY (REVISED Saturday, April 5, 2014) – One of Canada’s most storied Championships will be hosted at the Langley Events Centre this August. The BC Junior ‘A’ Lacrosse League announced on Thursday that the Minto Cup will have a mainland home at the LEC for the 2014 season.
The Minto Cup alternates between an Eastern and Western facility every year, and the home facility is traditionally based upon the host team. However, for the 2014 season, the LEC will be the host venue for the West so long as the host team resides in the Lower Mainland, something that has been the case each year since 1986 when Victoria-Esquimalt hosted the event.
“We are excited to be able to call the LEC Home when the event is played on the Mainland and in the West,” BCJALL Commissioner Ken Wood said adding that having a somewhat permanent home will advance the planning every two years.
This year the 2014 Minto Cup is returning from a four-team tournament format to the more traditional best-of-seven series featuring the top team in the East versus the top team in the West.
The champions from the British Columbia Junior A Lacrosse League will compete against the champions from the Alberta Junior A League for the right to represent the West. This sets the stage for a West versus East (Ontario Junior A League) best of seven playoff battle for the Minto Cup, which will take place at the LEC.
The journey to the 2014 Minto Cup begins next month, as the Junior A season kicks off April 26 in Delta.
