Lakers Draw First Blood in League Final
With the post season wrapping up and the Minto Cup just around the corner, the Lakers and Adanacs are putting it all on the line; in what’s slated to be an entertaining and cut-throat series.
Goaltending was key for both teams throughout the game tonight. Coquitlam brought in Scott Lowe in relief for Tyler Richards a couple of minutes in to the third frame, and Adam Meakes held the whole game for the Lakers.
The first period was a show between the pipes. Calculated plays from both teams tested both goalies early and often. Both stood tall and kept the period to a two goal tie.
The Lakers had a great start in the second, with Mike Grimes and Dane Dobbie scoring in the first five minutes. With a couple of minutes left in the period Garett Billings stirred up the crowd with a fantastic unassisted goal.
Four of the Adanacs five goals came on the power play or short handed. On the PP in the second, Jordan Weir got a great pass from Calvin Craig to put in Coquitlam’s third marker.
Burnaby doubled their score in the third, putting in another five goals. Most notable was a blind pass by Brock Armour to Billings- who held possession for just the right amount of time for Dobbie to rip off the bench and throw in the eighth goal.
Emotions came out when both teams got into penalty trouble in the final frame. Some pushing and shoving here and there, but only to be expected between these two power house teams.
The best of five series continues Tuesday night in Coquitlam when the A’s look to even it up in front of their home crowd.
