Good Crowd, Fights, and Third Period at PoCo

By Jen Mutas

““Hells Bells” a very appropriate song for last nights game. I sat in the Surrey section of the stands figuring I’d have some room, but was soon crowded by Stickmen supporters.

PoCo went up 5-1 after 20 minutes, with shots even at 14 a piece. Saints Eric Sage set the tone early, getting in Surrey’s way whenever possible.

Stickmen forward Dane Eitel was calling for penalties all night after getting rocked on a regular basis, mostly at the hands of Sage, but no luck.

PoCo was great on the PK scoring three short handed goals. After 40 minutes the Saints looked good all over, whether up or down a man or two.

The Surrey crowd was getting restless being down 13-4 to start the third. I could feel the frustration coming off the bench for the Stickmen, nothing was going their way- plays were getting broken up, interceptions all over the place, and no solid chances.

Birthday boy Jordan Flaman fed Aaron Pascas for his seventh of the night to open the third for the Saints, but after that the game went Surrey’s way.

Stickmen goalie Brandon Smith stood tall in the third making a great save on Kevin Miotto which seemed to give his team the boost they needed.

Surrey went on to kill a two man advantage and even getting some short handed chances. After that, the momentum built up fast with Ryan Harwood and Kyle Starchuk getting power play goals for Surrey halfway through the period.

With nine minutes to go in the game Harwood and Saints Kevin Miotto threw down the gloves for a great fight, but the best was still to come.

What better way to celebrate your birthday than with a good fight? Poco’s Jordan Flaman did just that- taking on Sean Messenger in the last seconds of the game; and even with his jersey over his head, and Messenger having the size advantage, Flaman managed to throw down some great blows.

A good fight was just what the bench and the crowd needed to seal the game for both teams.

PoCo walked with the 16-6 win, Surrey left obviously frustrated, but to look at the bright side- they made the third interesting despite the numbers on the scoreboard.

Aaron Pascas was named first star with his 7 goals on the evening, and I must make a mention to the little girl that came out during the second intermission with the wicked pink lacrosse stick and matching ball, not too often you hear “awh” at a lacrosse game!

Next game for both teams, the Saints take on the 5-2 Shamrocks on Sunday at home, and Surreys plays the Salmonbellies at Queen's Park on Tuesday night.
