You got the feeling that the Victoria Shamrocks weren't done yet.
On the brink of elimination in their Best-of-5 series against the No. 1 seeded Coquitlam Adanacs, the 'Rocks came flying out of the gate with something to prove. Nick Preston scored just over seven minutes in to set the tone and was followed up by a pair of Marshal King goals to give Victoria a quick 3-0 lead. They would go into the 2nd period feeling good about a 5-3 lead, but knowing it will take more than just a good 20 minutes to get a win.
They would extend their lead to 9-6 after going on a three-goal run in the middle of the second period, getting contributions from Brian Robb, Daniel Smith and Cameron Garlin with Smith scoring on the short man. But a late goal out of Keenan Koswin seemed to stem some of Victoria's momentum, and give Coquitlam the confidence they needed to come from behind and sweep the rug right out from under Victoria.
Coquitlam ended up doing just that.
An amazing nine-goal run went untested by Victoria, with Chase Scanlan making up the three-goal deficit right on the five minute mark. Completely shut down until the late stages of the period, all the Shamrocks were able to piece together is a Brad McCulley power play goal and a marker with the goalie out of the net.
Despite the season being over for Victoria, they can take a lot of positives from it going into next year. They have a young core that really developed over the last year, and some game-breakers. Another year in the league will many of these players wonders. They also dramatically outperformed expectations and that will also build more and more excitement, even if that means they are more of a target next season.
The Adanacs now move on to the BCJALL finals, where they will again look to punch their ticket to the Minto Cup in Brampton as they take on their fiercest rival in the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
THREE STARS
1ST STAR - TOMMY SCANLAN, COQUITLAM ADANACS (1 G, 4 A) - Both Scanlan brothers were at their best in the final 20 minutes, but it was Tommy's ability to find Colin Munro just over five minutes into the 3rd to complete Coquitlam's run and give them a 10-9 lead. He ended up with five points overall.
2ND STAR - ELI SALAMA, COQUITLAM ADANACS (2 G) - If the A's want to go back to the Minto Cup, they'll need to rely on that defence to get them there. Part of their job is to help provide some secondary scoring, particularly on the fast break. The transition game is where they found a lot of success against the Bellies during the regular season. Salama had 2 goals during a rough 40 minutes for Coquitlam.
3RD STAR - MARSHAL KING, VICTORIA SHAMROCKS (2 G, 1 A) - King was absolutely electric at times upon his return to the Victoria bench, totaling 19 points (8 G, 11 A) in his first four career playoff games. He also had the classic Gordie Howe hat trick, dropping the gloves against Coquitlam import Steph Charbonneau in the 3rd period.
