Coquitlam Takes Top Spot
The last time these two teams met it was an 11-1 blowout for the A’s and the game would spell the eventual end for the Stickmen’s head coach. Since that game the A’s have gone 3-0 and South Fraser is 0-5. Tonight would be either a game of redemption for the Stickmen, or a repeat performance.
Superstar netminder Joel Weber was given a bit of a rest tonight and Dan Lewis would start in goal for the Adanacs.
In the opening frame it was the Stickmen who would get on the board first, something they haven’t done since game one of this season when they played Burnaby. Intermediate call up Andrew Bromley got a nice feed from Scott Davidson to put South Fraser in the game early.
SF's Jarrett Zavitz has a chance on goal. Kelly Kilpatrick would answer back for Coquitlam, and just as fast Mitch Dibblee would put the Stickmen back ahead by one.
Scott Defrancesco would tie it up again for the A’s, as well as throw in a short handed goal with five minutes left in the period. A marker from Jarett Davis, and another goal from Dibblee and Richard Willmott would end the period at a 4-4 tie, much to the surprise of Coquitlam.
Capitalizing on an interference penalty against the Stickmen, Robert Church put the A’s ahead and they never looked back.
Both Scott Davidson and Mitch Dibblee would score on the power play for South Fraser but two goals from Scott Defrancesco, along with Kevin Riley, Kelly Kilpatrick, and Michael Krgovich had the Adanacs up to a 10-6 lead going into the third.
After the Davidson goal for South Fraser the Adanacs would put in Joel Weber and it would prove to be the deciding factor in the game.
The Stickmen would only manage to crack Weber once in the third with a power play goal from Ryan Harwood.
Jordan Weir continued his domination in the third for Coquitlam scoring three goals with the man advantage. Defrancesco would put in his second short handed goal of the night, and Corey Williamson had two impressive goals late in the third; his final goal was an absolute rifle as he was streaming in from the bench.
Game Notes:
A refreshing change from the last game I watched, penalties in this match were even at seven a piece. The ones called were fair, and only a few were undisciplined. Both teams did a good job of playing the game, and playing it smart.
Final shots on the night were 67-41 for the A’s and another reminder for South Fraser that in order to get more goals they need to put more balls on the net.
Players stepping up for both teams were a bonus tonight- Bromley, Davidson, and Mohony had three points each for South Fraser, and Mitch Dibblee had 5 Points. For Coquitlam- Scott Defrancesco impressed with 9 points, Jarrett Davis managed 8, and Kilpatrick and Krgovich had 6 a piece. Goaltending was definitely the key to this game. As soon as Weber was put in, it was like night and day for the A’s bench. Players had more confidence, and after Weber would make key saves- he would put the ball where it needed to go. When he’s on the floor it’s like the A’s have a sixth runner on the floor with the crisp passes he makes. Weber is definitely the cherry on top for Coquitlam, and makes the game more interesting to watch for the fans.
