Burnaby Look Focused in Second Win

At a time when most lacrosse fans are back at home on the couch watching the days highlights; game two of the league final between Coquitlam and Burnaby was just wrapping up. A combination of fights, penalties, and confusion all around- made for a game which kept fans in their seats for a longer than usual.

After losing in Burnaby on Sunday, the Adanacs were looking to even the series at home and not let the Lakers get up two-nil. In game one the A’s seemed to lay down in the third and didn’t get back into it until it was too late.

Burnaby came out hard and shot three for three; Garett Billings and Dane Dobbie fooled Tyler Richards, and Jamie Lincoln put in one of his signature one timers to keep Burnaby up 3-1 at the first intermission.

Calvin Craig put in the A’s first marker with 29 seconds left in the period on the power play. The first frame was so quick- end to end play with lots of contact, which really got the crowd into it.

The second was filled with penalties, but the Lakers managed to knock in quite a few more goals in addition to spending time in the box. Alex Gajic and Dane Dobbie both had two goals in the second, and Brock Armour threw in the last goal of the period for Burnaby.

Kelly Kilpatrick was the only Coquitlam player to get on the score sheet in the second. The home crowd and the A’s bench were crying foul from the second period onwards, but whether it was bad calls or not- Burnaby was all over Coquitlam. The frustration of the Adanacs was hard to miss.

After a full floor scrap in the third, Matt Beers, Kevin Riley, Scott Rouse, Jesse Adamson, and Jim Clifford all received game misconducts for Coquitlam. Both goalies switched after the fights- Angus Goodleaf for Burnaby and Scott Lowe for the A’s.

For the remainder of the third there was 3 on 3 play for a couple of minutes, and then Burnaby was up 5 on 3 for around five minutes. Kelly Kilpatrick scored short handed for the A’s with five minutes to go, and Joe Vetere scored Burnaby’s ninth and final goal of the game.

Just like game one- shots were about even, the Lakers with 30 and Coquitlam with 28.

The only thing the Lakers did wrong tonight was take too many penalties. Otherwise, they played a great fast game with set plays that rarely failed. They need to stay under Coquitlam’s skin without getting themselves in trouble.

In order for Coquitlam to come back and take a game off Burnaby in this series, they have to play the full 60 minutes and stay out of the box. When the A’s are on their game they are hard to beat; they need to get the frustration out of their systems and play a calculated game on Thursday night when game three goes down in Burnaby.
