British Columbian Players Excel in NCAA

Newark, Del. (Mar. 15, 2008) – In another offensive minded game for the Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team freshman Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia) scored a school record 10 goals here today to lead Stony Brook to a 19-16 upset win over No. 7 Delaware, the highest ranked team that the Seawolves have defeated as a Division I program. McBride also tied the school mark for points in a game with 12. The victory moved the Seawolves to the .500 mark at 2-2 while Delaware suffered its second straight setback to fall to 5-2.

"I am so proud of the guys," remarked Stony Brook head coach Rick Sowell. "This is one of the best games I have coached in, the team was just relentless. We had a good week of practice and felt like we would play well. We knew that they were a dangerous team and they would score their goals. I am just proud of the way our guys did not give up and hung in there.”

Delaware scored two quick goals to start the game to take a 2-0 lead just a minute and a half in. After that the Stony Brook offense found its stride against the Blue Hens, scoring three straight over the last 12:40 of the first. Freshman Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia) put SBU on the board off an assist from McBride at the 12:40 mark. After that senior Bobby Trenkle (Commack, N.Y.) and McBride put in scores just 15 seconds apart off of assists from senior Rhys Duch (Victoria, British Columbia) to take a 3-2 lead.

McBride made it two in a row 30 seconds into the second before the Blue Hens got back on the board on a goal from Drew Turner. The teams then traded scores until Delaware reeled off three straight to take a 7-6 lead at the 7:05 mark. But senior Bo Tripodi (Hauppauge, N.Y.) evened things up at 7-7 with his first score of the game three minutes later. The Blue Hens again took the lead on one of Curtis Dickson’s five goals, but with 1:40 left in the half McBride evened things up again with his fourth score of the game.

Delaware came out in the third quarter with its offense clicking, scoring four over the first three and a half minutes to take a 12-8 lead. That proved to be the high water mark for the Blue Hens, however, as Stony Brook erupted for seven goals over the last 10 minutes of the quarter. Senior Owen Adams (Norwalk, Conn.) started things off with 9:39 showing with his second goal of the season. McBride then caught fire, scoring four in a seven minute stretch that put the Seawolves up 13-12. Delaware tied it again at 13-all, but SBU closed out the quarter with scores by Adams and Duch to take a 15-13 lead into the fourth.

Stony Brook put two more on the board in the opening minutes of the fourth to take its largest lead of the game, 17-13. Delaware closed to three on a man-up opportunity with 10:27 left, but McBride and Tripodi answered with scores that gave the Seawolves a 19-14 advantage with less then seven minutes to go. The Blue Hens came back with a pair of goals in the last two minutes, but it was too little, too late as SBU went on to take the upset victory.

In addition to the day the McBride had, Duch finished with seven points for Stony Brook on a goal and six assists to set new career highs in points and assists. Adams finished with three goals and an assist, while Crowley added two goals and two assists.

McBride’s 10 goals broke the school record of eight, which was accomplished three times with the most recent coming when Kevin Pall scored eight against Quinnipiac on April 25, 2001. His 12 points tied the school mark held by John Sproat (vs. Marist – 4/29/90) and John Warrack (vs. Southampton – 4/24/85).

Stony Brook will be back at home for its next game as it hosts Lafayette on Tuesday, March 18 at 3:00PM.
