Bellies out last Saints in 10-6 thriller

Yesterday, the Poco Saints (4-7) travelled to the historic Queen’s Park to battle the New Westminster Salmonbellies (10-1), where the Bellies came up on top, winning 10-6. Poco was led by Mickey Fitzpatrick (3G, 2A), while New West was led by Connor Robinson (4G, 2A). 

Karter Williams received the start in net for the Saints, while Erik Kratz started for the Bellies. Bellies came out strong with five straight goals in the first 14 minutes. The scoring started with Robinson (2 goals), followed by Larson Sundown, Colton Bykowsky, and Carter Dickson. Poco’s Cam Overby came into net for the remainder of the game. Before the period was over, Poco and New West exchanged goals (Connor Frost – Poco, Dalton Lupul – New West, & Fitzpatrick – Poco), giving the Bellies a 6-2 lead going into the second period. 

Six minutes into the second period, Robinson completed his hat trick. The Saints begin to close the gap, capitalizing on their two power plays (Fitzpatrick and Dylan Foulds). Fitzpatrick added another goal for Poco and complete his hat trick. Robinson scored a short-handed goal with a minute left to continue New West’s lead, 8-5.

In the third period, Frost scored in the first two minutes, only to be answered by a goal from Erik Maas (New West). Sundown tallies the Bellies last point of the game with 12 minutes left in the third, giving them the two points over Poco.  

Williams faced 12 shots, allowed 5 goals, for a save percentage of 0.58, while Overby had 31 shots, allowing 5 goals, for a save percentage of 0.83. Kratz faced 40 shots, allowing 6 goals, for a save percentage of 0.85.

Poco’s next game is on Friday, June 9, Poco Rec Centre @ 8pm vs Delta Islanders (3-9)

New West’s next game is on Thursday, June 8, Langley Events Centre @ 730pm vs Langley Thunder (7-4).
