BCJALL Power Rankings: (2nd Edition)

Not much movement this week aside from Coquitlam putting an exclamation mark on their claim to the top spot. As the Adanacs sit in the penthouse by unanimous decision keep an eye on that fourth seed race as Burnaby has turned it on and looks to be ready to push Poco and Nanaimo for a playoff spot. And towards the bottom, time is running out on a Delta team that has plenty of offensive talent but has really struggled from the jump. With all that in mind, here are your BC Jr A Power Rankings as of June 6, 2023 as voted on by GM's and team staff.

#1. Coquitlam Adanacs (10-2): About as well balanced as you're going to get the perennial power house claims the top spot by unanimous decision. Very strong on loose balls, speed to burn in transition, and plenty of guys who can fire the ball from the outside. If their goaltending can become more consistent the Adanacs will be extremely difficult to take down.

Up Next: NW, @Nanaimo

#2. Victoria Shamrocks (8-3): Holding onto that second position the Shamrocks seem to still be looking for their identity. Despite their strong record and pedigree, the 'Rocks have been involved in a number coin flip type games. Poised to get Noah Manning back and likely to add at the deadline, can Victoria start to move into that Minto contender that many would have expected to start the year? Kyle Pepper has definitely picked up the slack after the mass exodus of players from last year's BC champ and with Bland in net they should have the best goaltender in the league at their disposal.

#3. Nanaimo (6-4): The Timbermen have been the both the biggest surprise and the league's best story in 2023. Far exceeding any expectations after last year's push to win with a core that was aging out fell well short. Despite losing a bunch of talent Nanaimo has brought a very good defense and an athletic hard working team to the floor that has established itself as a legitimate threat, especially at home on the island. Plenty of credit is due to that coaching staff as they push to solidify a playoff spot.

#4. Port Coquitlam (7-4): A red hot start has put the Saints in very good position to have their best season since the Curtis Dickson days. Well coached, Poco plays an aggressive in your face brand of lacrosse and has shown a strong work ethic throughout the season. Part of me wonders if they look to go out and add to the right side of their offense with a couple moves at the deadline. Ryder Bremner stabilizes this team and his play will have a large say in how far Poco ultimately goes in 2023.

#5. Burnaby Lakers (4-6): Conversely to Poco, the Lakers have been crippled by what was a very rough start. Thanks to some strong leadership and coaching from Head Coach Ty Yanko and an offense that has multiple gifted scoring threats Burnaby has turned it around going 3-1 over their last four, including an upset win over Coquitlam, to propel themselves back into the playoff race. If Burnaby can shore up a defense that has allowed a bit too much this is a team that can make a run with the offensive threats they possess.

#6Delta Islanders (2-8): It's been the season from hell for the Islanders who despite being picked to make the playoffs by most have really struggled to gain traction. The star power of Silas Richmond and Ben McDonald hasn't translated to success on the floor and the back gate hasn't held its own. It would take an historic run for Delta to keep their playoff hopes a live but we know they can score goals, and when that's the case, you never know.

Up Next: @NW, Bby, Nan

#7. Langley Thunder (2-8): The Thunder have picked up their game of late and been much more competitive than a few weeks ago. A team dealing with a huge amount of roster turnover and an infusion of youth, it's been a tough go to this point. But how good is Stuart Phillips? In three games since returning to the Langley lineup, Phillips has recorded a point on 16 of the Thunder's 20 goals. That's simply insane.

Up Next: @Bby, @Poco

#8. New Westminster Salmonbellies (2-6): I actually think the Salmonbellies are getting undersold and undervalued here by their colleagues. Yes its a rebuilding year for a proud and perennially contending franchise. But take a look at their boxscores, very rarely are they being blown out and have the best goal differential of any of the non playoff teams! In many cases by far. Don't be surprised if the 'Bellies make a serious jump back up the standings by as soon as next year and they could cause some problems for some playoff teams down the stretch.
