BCJALL Power Rankings 5th Edition
By: Muhammad Jomha
As the regular season closes we bring you the final set of power rankings out of the coast. Both Coquitlam and Victoria made big deadline moves, Victoria multiple moves. But it's Nanaimo who has been playing the better ball with an aggressive transition game and elite level goaltending. Here is how things shake out heading into the playoffs according to the teams themselves.
#1. Coquitlam (17-3): The Adanacs sometimes don't do things the easy way but they almost always come out on the right side of the scoreboard. That defense remains one of the best in the country. Can they get more consistent goaltending? Phillips and Malawsky really boost that offense.
#2. Nanaimo (12-7): Nanaimo suffered a defeat on the mainland last Sunday to the league leading Adanacs but after getting down 4-0 early they made it a fight ultimately losing 11-9. The Timbermen defeated recently reloaded Victoria last week and are playing fast paced lacrosse. Colby Bowman, Arsenault, and Vincent are all having standout seasons for the T'Men in what has been THE surprise team of the summer so far.
#3. Victoria (14-6): Lots of deadline adds on the island, will they mesh well? They are going to need to in order to get past a confident and driven Nanaimo side in Round 1. Lots of offense on paper, Victoria will need to find something they haven't been able to in years past to get by both Nanaimo and Coquitlam.
#4. Poco (9-10-1): After a 6-0 start the Saints have now gone 3-10-1 since but will find themselves in the playoffs with teams like Burnaby and New West not being able to get over the hurdles of getting off to poor starts and then selling. The Saints are struggling and will need throw the kitchen sink at the Adanacs in Round 1 to bring their hopes back to life.
#5. Burnaby (8-11): Burnaby had a much better roster than their record indicated, especially early on but the Lakers dropped way too many games they should have won and fell too far from contention. Ultimately the Lakers would sell off at the deadline and look to the future as long time stars Vela and Klarich age out.
#6. New Westminster (6-13): The rebuild continues in Queens Park as the Bellies showed much more promise than most expected this year. They collected more draft picks at the deadline and will be a team to look out for as we move into 2024. New West and that front office deserve a lot of credit for what they've done over the past calendar year.
#7. Delta Islanders (6-14): Expectations weren't met in Delta this year and they might be the most interesting team to follow this offseason. There could be a lot of change in Islander land as they look to head back in the right direction.
#8. Langley Thunder (5-13-1): Last years BCJALL's runner up has had a rough season losing about 19 players off last season's roster. And their two remaining guns, Phillips and Malawsky returned to the team late. The Thunder got a haul for the two aforementioned offensive threats at the deadline though and they will look to build towards the future.
