BCJALL Mourns Tragic Discovery at Kamloops Residential School

by Owen Munro

The BCJALL would like to pass on deep condolences to the families of the 215 Indigenous children who were found buried in an unmarked grave at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.  Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc Kukpi7 (Chief) Rosanne Casimir says that to their knowledge, the missing children are undocumented deaths, with some as young as three years old.

We mourn the loss of life and support any measure of truth and reconciliation going forward. We also urge everyone to educate themselves about the residential school system and the atrocities committed within them. We urge everyone to continue to speak up about Indigenous rights and freedoms. We are honoured and privileged to play the Medicine Game and will always put our best foot forward to represent the values and traditions of Indigenous peoples.

We also support anyone who decides to wear orange in the coming week at schools or workplaces to honour the 215 children.
