BCJALL Honours Orange Shirt Day
The BCJALL is throwing its support behind Orange Shirt Day. September 30th is a special day because it honours the Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools in Canada while learning more about the history of those schools. The message is that every child matters - and the platform helps fight racism and bullying.
The orange shirt refers to Phyllis Webstad. It was the colour of shirt given to her by her grandmother for her first day of residential school in BC. When she got to school, they took away her clothes, and her orange shirt was never returned. Phyllis has said the incident made her feel "like I was worth nothing."
There's many ways you can get involved or show your support. You can wear an orange shirt and share the story of Phyllis Webstad. There are also a number of events going on around the province. For more information, visit www.orangeshirtday.org.
