BCJALL AWARDS: Poco's Degroot wins Most Inspirational

by Owen Munro

AL BOLES MEMORIAL TROPHY

MOST INSPIRATIONAL PLAYER

This player must have the ability and leadership and above all, be an inspiration to his fellow teammates and management staff on and off the floor.

SAM DEGROOT, PORT COQUITLAM SAINTS

One of the biggest storylines for the Saints this year was just how many guys they were missing from school. With up to 17 players away at school at the start of the year, Poco were slow out of the gates, going 0-4.

They owe a lot to guys like Sam Degroot, who never allowed them to stay in the same funk they started the season in. Instead, he was one of the instrumental players to help turn it around for the black and yellow. A leading scorer and true heart and soul guy for the team, Degroot was keyed upon more than once by head coach Kelly Scott to be one of the team's biggest leaders.

Degroot finished second in team scoring in 2017, scoring 50 points for the first time in his three-year career. He had 25 goals, 26 assists for 51 total points in 17 games played.

This honour is one of the highest as it exemplifies what it takes to not only be a Junior A lacrosse player, but to handle the responsibilities that go along with it. Degroot is a well-liked player around the league and a true leader. Congratulations to Sam.

Our Awards Series continues tomorrow when we announce the Keith MacEachren Most Sportsmanlike Player Award and the Bob Reid Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement.
