coquitlam wins series 4-2
The New Westminster Salmonbellies threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Coquitlam Adanacs, but it wasn't enough to top the mountain and force a Game 7 as they fell to their arch-rivals Coquitlam 11-6. The A's are now off to their tenth straight Minto Cup appearance in what has been described on social media as a decade of dominance.
A Tre Leclaire goal with a little more than three minutes in the first period gave the team some hope down 5-3 going into the final 40 minutes, but the team ran into Christian Del Bianco - the eventual series MVP - and couldn't buy a goal in the next 20 minutes. Goals from Dennon Armstrong and Ethan Ticehurst extended Coquitlam's lead to 8-3 and gave the 'Bellies an especially tough task in the 3rd period.
Goals from Charlie Kurtenbach and Will Malcolm cut the lead down to 8-5 but Coquitlam would again find momentum towards the end of the period, scoring 3 of the final 4 goals to put the game out of reach.
Coquitlam's transition game and performance with a man-down were major factors in this one. Dennon Armstrong's second-period tally came at the tail end of a great kill by the Adanacs' man-down unit, building on an Adam Fulton shorty in the first period.
Coquitlam's rather subdued celebration after winning another provincial banner shows the work isn't close to being done for this group. They expected this victory and played to those expectations throughout the series, finding their way after going down 2-1 in the series. The A's now join the Okotoks Raiders and Calgary Mountaineers in the Minto Cup, with the winner of the Brampton Excelsiors and Orangeville Northmen joining the trio in Calgary.
