Coquitlam goes 1-0 at minto
NEXT GAME - TONIGHT 7 PM v. OKOTOKS RAIDERS (RMJALL CHAMPIONS)
It was a dominant night from the first whistle for the BC champs from Coquitlam, who took it to the Alberta runner-ups Calgary Mountaineers to win their Minto Cup opener 16-1.
Chase Scanlan and Larson Sundown led the attack with 3 goals and 4 assists apiece while Christian Del Bianco was stellar as usual in net stopping 27 of 28 shots before being pulled for rest in favour of Nathan Faccin, who saw action in his 2nd straight Minto Cup and made all 3 saves in 8:52 of action.
The Adanacs were improved in transition and their big bodies on D seemed to pose a major problem for the Mounties' offence. Coquitlam massively outshot Calgary at a nearly 2-1 margin, 61-31.
Calgary quickly turned to Saskatchewan SWAT goalie Laine Hruska, who stopped 30 of 41 shots. The 16-year-old is fresh off a gold medal with the Team Canada World Junior Lacrosse team in Saskatoon.
The Mounties were flat coming out of the gate and gave up 7 goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. They never seemed to regroup after that, although they did tighten up a bit on defense. They will have to put this game behind them quickly as they take on the Ontario champs Brampton tonight, barely 12 hours after the Excelsiors hammered the Alberta champs Okotoks Raiders with 25 goals, up there with the most scored in Minto history.
Coquitlam is also back at it tonight at 7 PM when they take on Okotoks.
