Adanacs Breeze by Saints

The Coquitlam Adanacs looked to extend their winning streak to six when they hosted the Port Coquitlam Saints Wednesday night.

The first period was all Adanacs as it looked like the Saints did not show up to play. The Adanacs got on the board first when Johnathan Kraakman got a rebound off the glass and took a quick shot to beat Guilio Del Bianco at 4:22.

Just over 20 seconds later, Adanacs' Matt Olson took advantage of a bad Saints line change and put it past Del Bianco to make it 2-0 Adanacs. Andy Taylor made no mistake on his breakaway at 8:21 to make it 3-0.

It didn't get any better for Del Bianco and the Saints. With Lyndon Knuttila in the box for four minutes due to a checking from behind penalty, Chase McIntyre and Griffen Leclaire scored on the power play to give the Adanacs a commanding 5-0 lead.

It was the end of Del Bianco's night when Taylor netted his second of the game at 11:59, as Bryce Phenix enters the goal for the Saints.

The goalie change brought a little bit of life in the Saints as Tre Mason broke Riley Camazzola's shutout at 16:17 with a nice shot from the top of the circle, but the Adanacs got the goal back rather quickly when McIntyre scored his second of the game at 18:12 on the power play to make it 7-1 Adanacs heading into the second period.

The second period saw the Saints tighten up their defense, but they still continued their scoring woes. The Adanacs were late to come out to start the second period, so they received a bench minor, but the Saints couldn't generate any scoring chances on the power play.

The first goal of the period didn't come until 11:41 when Jake Taylor scored shorthanded to give the Adanacs an 8-1 lead. Mason scored his second of the game at 15:55 to give the Saints their second of the game, making the score 8-2 heading into the third period.

The third period saw more Coquitlam goals and more frustration from the Saints. Just like the Adanacs at the start of the second period, the Saints came out late and received a two-minute penalty for delay of game. The Adanacs did not score on the power play, but McIntyre notched his third of the game shortly after the penalty expired.

Brett Kujala scored at 8:18 followed by a Taylor Stuart goal at 12:28 to give the Adanacs an 11-2 lead. Shortly after the goal, Saints’ Patrick Thornhill dropped the gloves against Olson, but Olson didn’t really get into the fight as it was a rather quick one and Thornhill got the instigator penalty, a fighting penalty and a game misconduct.

To no surprise, the Adanacs were able pop two goals on the powerplay, getting goals from Kujala and Stuart, making the score 13-2. The Adanacs didn’t stop there, as Kraakman scored his second of the night and Kujala got his hat trick at 17:06.

With less than three minutes left in the game, McIntyre and Saints’ Luke Moffatt were exchanging some words along with some pushing and shoving. They both received two minutes for unsportsmanlike and it looked like Adanacs’ Greg Batt was not too happy with Moffat. After McIntyre scored his fourth of the night, Batt and Moffatt dropped the gloves and went at each other for quite some time, bringing jeers and cheers from the crowd and the benches.

To wrap it all up, Saints’ coach Adam Smith got ejected from the game with two seconds remaining and the referees decided to run the clock and end the game with the final score being 16-2 Adanacs.

Three stars of the game
1. Coquitlam - Chase McIntyre, 4 goals, 4 assists
2. Coquitlam - Taylor Stuart, 2 goals, 2 assists
3. Coquitlam - Andy Taylor, 2 goals, 1 assist

The Port Coquitlam Saints will look to regroup against the Langley Thunder on Friday night, while the Coquitlam Adanacs will get a bit of rest before their big game on Tuesday night when they take on the New Westminster Salmonbellies, which will be the first time these two teams meet since last year's final.
