Adanacs Blast Surrey at Home

Coquitlam went into the game with a 16 point lead in the standings. With that gap the Adanacs were expected to win, but no one would have guessed by how much.

After coming off a loss to Nanaimo where they blew their lead and lost in overtime against their home crowd, I expected Surrey to come out raging.

I talked to Stickmen Coach Curtis Gulliford before the game and asked what the mood was like. I was surprised when he told me that “his boys were calm- and ready”

And so it began…

Nolan Julseth-White made an impact just six seconds into the game when he gathered the loose ball from the face-off and threw it past Stickmen goalie Cody Lewis.

Mitch Dibblee scored on the power play for Surrey, but that’s all the scoreboard action they would see in the first.

Jordan Weir and Sean Robinson put in another couple for Coquitlam; Jarett Davis scored on the power play, and Ryan Kwasnica balanced it out with a short handed goal. Mike Brascia scored his first (of many) of the night, and yes- we are still in the first.

With a couple minutes left the Stickmen brought in goalie Brandon Smith. I mentioned in the last game against the Timbermen that he made Luongo-like saves. Well he did it again tonight- but he also showed the crowd he can leave his net like Marty Turco. It was like watching the first round of the Canuck playoffs all over again!

Dane Eitel put in two for the Stickmen in the second period. The latter goal was a power play beauty; the only way you could tell it was a goal was to see the net move- it didn’t hit anybody in traffic and Scott Lowe couldn’t touch it.

Ryan Harwood had a great short handed effort for the Stickmen going in with two Coquitlam checks and still managing a good shot. He would put in a power play goal from Dibblee and Eitel halfway through the period.

Coquitlam threw 8 goals past Brandon Smith in the second. Joel Burges added two more goals to his team leading point total, Calvin Craig doubled up as well, and four other Adanacs made it on the score sheet to end the second with a 14-5 lead.

Nolan Julseth-White started the third frame like he did the first, another goal for the Adanacs; and Calvin Craig played a lovely game of give-and-go with Sean Robinson to put in another power play marker.

At this point in the game I was predicting a fight sometime soon. Chris Martin from Surrey and Jordan Weir read my mind and decided to sort it out halfway through the period. Although both laid quite a few impressive blows- my nod went to Martin.

Mike Brascia put another two on the board for Coquitlam. This brought his total for the night to 4, and 9 on the season. He put his second goal in the back of the net while performing a backwards somersault worthy of Olympic gymnastics. I almost wrote “9” on a piece of paper and held it up in his direction.

Ryan Kwasnica had his second of the night when he snipered a shot past Smith. For the final goal of the evening- Adanacs' netminder Dan Lewis got in on the action and threw the long pass for Kevin Riley.

Final from Coquitlam Sports Center was 21-5.

Surrey will try and get a home win tomorrow night against the Salmonbellies; fresh off handing the Lakers their first loss of the last couple of seasons, and Coquitlam takes on the Saints in PoCo on Friday night.
